Wipe with the grain using warm water and a drop of dish soap on a microfibre cloth, then dry and buff with a second dry cloth. Skip abrasive pads, steel wool, chlorine bleach and glass cleaners with ammonia. For a streak-free finish, dry completely and buff in the direction of the grain.
Stainless steel is in almost every Vancouver kitchen, and it shows everything: fingerprints, drips, water spots and streaks. The trick isn't a special product — it's the direction you wipe and making sure you dry.
Step 1: find the grain
Brushed stainless steel has fine lines running in one direction, usually horizontal on fridges and dishwashers and sometimes vertical on range hoods. Look closely in good light. Always wipe and buff along those lines. Wiping across the grain pushes residue into the grooves and leaves streaks.
Step 2: the two-cloth method
- Cloth one (damp): a microfibre cloth with warm water and one drop of dish soap. Wring it well.
- Wipe with the grain, top to bottom, panel by panel. Handles get extra attention — that's where the grease is.
- Cloth two (dry): immediately dry and buff with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, also with the grain.
That's it for most weekly cleaning. Leftover soap is what causes most streaks, so if you see haze, go over it once more with a cloth dampened with plain water, then buff dry.
Fingerprints, grease and water spots
| Problem | What works |
|---|---|
| Fingerprints and smudges | Two-cloth method. A cleaner made for stainless steel can help them show less |
| Sticky grease on handles and the range | Warm water with a bit more dish soap, let it sit a minute, wipe, rinse and dry |
| Dried-on drips | Hold a warm damp cloth on the spot for a minute to soften it, then wipe |
| Water spots | Dry after every wipe. Metro Vancouver's soft water rarely leaves heavy mineral marks |
| Light rust-coloured spots | Often surface stains from steel wool or cast iron. A paste of baking soda and water, rubbed gently with the grain, then rinsed and dried |
A few drops of mineral oil or a stainless steel polish buffed on with the grain leaves a sheen and makes fingerprints show less. Use very little and buff it in — too much attracts dust. Check your appliance manual first; some makers recommend only their own products.

- Steel wool and abrasive scrub pads — they scratch, and tiny steel fibres left behind can rust.
- Chlorine bleach and cleaners with chlorides — they can stain and pit stainless steel.
- Glass cleaner with ammonia — it can streak and dull some finishes.
- Abrasive powders and the scrubby side of a kitchen sponge.
- Paper towels on brushed finishes — they leave lint. Microfibre is better.
Black stainless and fingerprint-resistant finishes
Black stainless steel and many "fingerprint-resistant" appliances have a coating on top of the metal. Treat them gently: water and a little dish soap on microfibre, then dry. Skip polishes, oils and anything abrasive unless the manufacturer recommends it — scratches in a coating can't be buffed out.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best thing to clean stainless steel with?
Warm water and a drop of dish soap on a microfibre cloth, wiped with the grain and then dried and buffed with a second dry cloth. It's safe for most stainless steel finishes.
Why does my stainless steel fridge look streaky?
Usually from leftover soap or cleaner, or from wiping across the grain. Go over it with a cloth dampened with plain water, then buff dry in the direction of the grain.
Can you use vinegar on stainless steel?
Diluted vinegar is sometimes used on stainless steel, but it isn't necessary and can harm coated finishes. Dish soap and water followed by a dry buff is the safer, simpler option.
Is Windex safe on stainless steel?
Glass cleaners containing ammonia can streak or dull some stainless finishes. Check your appliance manual, or stick with dish soap and water.
How do I clean black stainless steel?
Gently, with water and a little dish soap on microfibre, then dry. Avoid polishes, oils and abrasives unless the manufacturer recommends them, because the finish is a coating.
